I like gritty movies that try to show a semi-realistic version of a fake reality. Here we have a world in the future more controlled by corporations than even we are today. One of these groups shuts off access to water for those that can't pay and there's a riot. This is just the backdrop to this movie, and I really enjoyed the attention to detail. Plus, it features characters that are highly skilled, and I enjoy that, too. But it's dark and a bit weird, so the movie isn't for everyone.
Hotel Artemis is a hospital for criminals. Jodie Foster plays Nurse, who takes care of any patients with a valid membership. The rules keep the place going, but tonight rules are getting broken and things start falling apart. The movie opens with a robbery gone wrong, which I also really enjoyed. I hate it when nothing ever goes wrong or everything falls into place in a convoluted caper. The main guy (Sterling Brown) adjusts, but his crew isn't as cool-headed as he is and they get wounded, including his brother. So off they go to Hotel Artemis to get patched up. After they arrive, the riots cause other patients to get there which causes problems and chaos ensues.
I really did enjoy the movie. The characters get a good deep feel to them and there's a lot of unexpected heart to the movie. Mothers and sons, fathers and sons, brothers, etc all doing a little extra in this world of chaos and destruction. The rules and order are also a nice juxtaposition in this with the chaos. The story itself was a little thin and some of the acting was a little rough, but for the most part, I did enjoy the movie, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you like a bit of a stretch from reality mixed with a dose of sobering reality and killing and criminals, then this might just be up your alley!
